The AC Digital

Digital & Print
Lexicon

Every industry has its jargon. Ours has more than most — built from the collision of print craft, digital technology, media strategy and data science. Browse by discipline below, with quiz questions in each category to test your knowledge.

HTML · CSS · JavaScript · APIs · SSL · CDN
HTML
HyperText Markup Language
/eɪtʃ.tiː.ɛm.ɛl/

The structural skeleton of every webpage. It tells the browser what elements exist — headings, paragraphs, images, links — and in what order.

“HTML is the bones. CSS is the skin. JavaScript is the muscles.”

WebCodeFoundation
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets
/siː.ɛs.ɛs/

The language controlling how HTML elements look — colours, fonts, spacing, layout. Without CSS, the web is plain black text on white.

“All the typography, colour and spacing on this page is CSS.”

WebCodeDesign
JavaScript
Client-side scripting language
/ˈdʒɑːvəˌskrɪpt/

The language that makes web pages interactive and dynamic. Menus opening, forms validating, content loading without a page refresh — that’s JavaScript.

“The quiz on this page runs entirely in JavaScript.”

WebCodeInteractive
CMS
Content Management System
/siː.ɛm.ɛs/

Software that lets non-developers edit and publish website content. WordPress, Drupal, Craft — the engine behind the curtain.

“The client updates their blog every Monday without touching a single line of code.”

WebContent
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer
/ɛs.ɛs.ɛl/

The encryption that creates the padlock in your browser bar and https://. Without it, Google marks your site as Not Secure and rankings suffer.

“All our builds include SSL certificates as standard. No exceptions.”

WebSecurity
CDN
Content Delivery Network
/siː.diː.ɛn/

A global network of servers that delivers your site from the location nearest each visitor — cutting load times everywhere on earth.

“Moving to a CDN cut load time from 3.2s to 0.8s.”

WebPerformance
API Rate Limit
API call frequency restriction
/reɪt lɪmɪt/

A cap on how many times per minute an API can be called. Hit the limit and your integration breaks. Essential to plan for in any live integration.

“We build retry logic into every API integration to handle rate limit responses gracefully.”

Q1
What does HTML stand for?
AHyperText Markup Language
BHigh Transfer Media Link
CHosted Text Management Layer
DHyper Terminal Machine Logic
HTML is the skeleton of every webpage — it defines structure, not style or behaviour.
Q2
What does CSS stand for?
ACascading Style Sheets
BComputer Styling System
CContent Structure Script
DCoded Screen Syntax
CSS controls how HTML elements look. Without it, the web would be plain text on white.
Q3
JavaScript is primarily used for what on a website?
AInteractivity and dynamic behaviour
BStructuring page content
CStyling visual elements
DStoring data in a database
JS makes pages respond — menus open, forms validate, content loads without refreshing.
SEO · SEM · PPC · Analytics · CRO · GA4
PPC
Pay Per Click
/piː.piː.siː/

An advertising model where you only pay when a user clicks. Google Ads is the dominant platform. Highly measurable — budgets can pause instantly.

“PPC drove 45% of our client’s new business enquiries in year one.”

PaidAdvertising
CTR
Click-Through Rate
/siː.tiː.ɑːr/

The percentage of people who see your content and actually click it. Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100. The fundamental measure of whether your message lands.

“Industry average CTR for display is 0.1%. Our campaigns average 0.4%.”

AnalyticsKPI
CRO
Conversion Rate Optimisation
/siː.ɑːr.əʊ/

The systematic process of increasing the percentage of visitors who take a desired action. Data-driven testing, not guesswork.

“A/B testing the hero CTA increased form submissions by 34%.”

AnalyticsUX
GA4
Google Analytics 4
/dʒiː.eɪ.fɔː/

Google’s current analytics platform. Event-based rather than session-based, with built-in machine learning. Replaced Universal Analytics in 2023.

“We migrated all clients to GA4 before the Universal Analytics sunset.”

AnalyticsGoogle
UTM
Urchin Tracking Module
/juː.tiː.ɛm/

Parameters added to URLs that tell analytics exactly where traffic came from — which campaign, channel, and specific link.

“Every email and social link we send carries UTM parameters. We never fly blind.”

AnalyticsTracking
Bounce Rate
Single-page session percentage
/baʊns reɪt/

The percentage of visitors who leave after viewing only one page. High isn’t always bad — a blog read fully then closed is still a success.

“After the UX redesign, bounce rate dropped from 72% to 31%.”

Q1
What does “organic reach” mean in digital marketing?
ATraffic gained without paying for advertising
BReach from eco-friendly campaigns
CTraffic from search engines only
DAudience from influencer partnerships
Organic reach has declined dramatically as platforms prioritise paid. What was 20% on Facebook in 2012 is often under 2% today.
Q2
What does UTM stand for in tracking links?
AUrchin Tracking Module
BUniversal Traffic Metric
CUser Traffic Monitor
DURL Tag Manager
UTM parameters tell analytics exactly where traffic came from — which campaign, channel, and specific link.
Q3
What is GA4?
AGoogle’s current analytics platform
BA 4-dimension ad measurement unit
CA government web accessibility standard
DA social media ROI framework
GA4 replaced Universal Analytics in 2023. It uses event-based rather than session-based tracking.
Leaderboard · Skyscraper · MPU · Programmatic
ROAS
Return on Ad Spend
/rəʊ.æz/

Revenue generated for every £1 spent on advertising. A ROAS of 4× means £4 revenue per £1 spent. The ultimate campaign efficiency metric.

“Ecommerce campaigns typically target ROAS of 4–8×.”

AdvertisingKPI
Leaderboard
728×90px web ad unit
/ˈliːdəbɔːd/

A wide, shallow banner — 728×90 pixels — that sits at the top of a webpage. One of the most common and recognisable display formats on the web.

“The homepage leaderboard position is reserved for our highest-spend advertisers.”

Web AdsDisplay
MPU
Mid-Page Unit
/ɛm.piː.juː/

A square ad unit — typically 300×250 pixels — embedded within editorial content. The workhorse of display: highest viewability of any standard format.

“The MPU sits where people read — which is why it outperforms the leaderboard on engagement.”

Web AdsDisplay
Skyscraper
160×600px vertical ad unit
/ˈskaɪskreɪpər/

A tall, narrow vertical banner running down the side of a page — typically 160×600 pixels. High visibility, long dwell time.

“Skyscrapers work best on long-scroll editorial pages where they stay in view.”

Web AdsDisplay
Programmatic
Automated ad buying platform
/ˌprəʊɡrəˈmætɪk/

The automated buying and selling of ad space using algorithms and real-time bidding. The right ad, right person, right moment — at machine speed.

“Programmatic now accounts for over 80% of all digital display ad spend globally.”

TechDisplayPaid
Pre-roll
Video ad before main content
/priː rəʊl/

A video ad that plays before the main video content. 15 seconds non-skippable or 30 seconds skippable. The first 5 seconds are everything.

“Our pre-roll creative opens with a question — it stops the skip reflex instantly.”

Q1
What size is a standard leaderboard banner ad?
A728×90 pixels
B300×250 pixels
C160×600 pixels
D970×250 pixels
The leaderboard sits at the top of a webpage — wide and shallow, one of the most recognised formats on the web.
Q2
What is a “skyscraper” ad?
AA tall vertical banner — typically 160×600px
BA full-page takeover ad
CA billboard at the top of the page
DAn ad that follows you as you scroll
Skyscrapers run down the side of a page. High visibility, long dwell time — but can feel intrusive if overdone.
Q3
What is “programmatic” advertising?
AAutomated buying and selling of ad space using algorithms
BAdvertising during TV programmes
CA type of sponsored content
DHand-coded banner ads
Programmatic auctions ad impressions in milliseconds as a page loads. The right ad, right person, right moment.
DPI · CMYK · DPS · GSM · PMS · Bleed · OBC
DPI
Dots Per Inch
/diː.piː.aɪ/

The resolution of a printed image. 72dpi is screen-fine. 300dpi is the print minimum. Supply 72dpi for press and your logo prints as a blur.

“Always supply images at 300dpi at actual size. Never scale up a low-res file.”

PrintResolution
DPS
Double Page Spread
/diː.piː.ɛs/

Two facing pages treated as a single, uninterrupted canvas — the most premium and most expensive editorial real estate in any publication.

“A full DPS in a national trade title can cost more than a month of digital advertising.”

Print AdsEditorial
GSM
Grams per Square Metre
/dʒiː.ɛs.ɛm/

The weight and perceived quality of paper. 80gsm is copier paper. 170gsm is a quality brochure. 350gsm is a premium business card.

“We specified 350gsm with soft-touch laminate for the cover — it feels as premium as it looks.”

PrintPaper
Bleed
Artwork overage beyond trim
/bliːd/

Artwork that extends 3mm beyond the trim edge, ensuring no white border appears after cutting. Forget it and your printer will not be pleased.

“All print files must be supplied with 3mm bleed and 5mm safe area for critical content.”

PrintTechnical
PMS
Pantone Matching System
/piː.ɛm.ɛs/

A standardised spot colour system ensuring your brand colour is identical across every print job, every press, every country.

“Brand guidelines specify Pantone 485C for the corporate red — every printer worldwide knows that colour exactly.”

PrintColourBrand
OBC
Outside Back Cover
/əʊ.biː.siː/

The most premium position in any print publication. Full colour, full page — the last thing you see when you put the magazine down.

“We secured the OBC for the product launch — the highest-impact page in the entire issue.”

ADouble Page Spread
BDigital Print System
CDocument Publishing Standard
DDot Pattern Screen
A DPS is two facing pages treated as one canvas — the most premium editorial real estate in any publication.
Q2
What is “bleed” in print design?
AArtwork extending beyond the trim edge
BThe ink saturation level
CA fade between colours
DThe gap between text columns
Bleed (typically 3mm) ensures no white border appears after cutting. Miss it and your printer won’t be happy.
Q3
What does OBC stand for in print advertising?
AOutside Back Cover
BOffset Black Colour
COriginal Brand Copy
DOpen Booking Contract
The OBC is the most premium — and expensive — position in any print publication.
JPEG · PNG · SVG · PDF · TIFF · EPS · RGB
SVG
Scalable Vector Graphic
/ɛs.viː.dʒiː/

A resolution-independent vector format — mathematically defined, not pixel-based. Perfect at any size, from a 16px favicon to a 20-metre billboard.

“All UI icons and the company logo are delivered as SVG for infinite scalability.”

VectorWebLogo
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group
/ˈdʒeɪ.pɛɡ/

A compressed image format for photographs on screen. Each save degrades quality — like photocopying a photocopy. Never use JPEG for print-ready artwork.

“Use JPEG for web images. Use TIFF or PNG for anything going to print.”

ImageWeb
PNG
Portable Network Graphics
/pɪŋ/

A lossless screen format supporting transparency. Ideal for logos, icons and graphics. No quality loss on re-save.

“All logos with transparent backgrounds must be supplied as PNG for web use.”

ImageWebTransparency
TIFF
Tagged Image File Format
/tɪf/

A lossless, high-quality image format favoured in professional print production. Large files, perfect quality — no compression artefacts, ever.

“Archive all final photography as TIFF. Export JPEG only for web and email delivery.”

PrintImageLossless
EPS
Encapsulated PostScript
/iː.piː.ɛs/

A vector file format for exchanging artwork between designers and printers. Infinitely scalable without quality loss. The standard for logo handoff to press.

“If a supplier asks for your logo as an EPS, they’re a proper print operation.”

VectorPrintLogo
RGB
Red Green Blue
/ɑːr.dʒiː.biː/

The colour model used for screens. All monitors mix red, green and blue light. Fundamentally different from CMYK — never supply RGB files to press.

“Web hex codes are RGB (#d4001a). Print values are CMYK (0, 100, 87, 17).”

Q1
Which file format is best for print-ready artwork?
APDF/X
BJPEG
CPNG
DGIF
PDF/X ensures fonts are embedded, colours are CMYK, and images are high resolution. Non-negotiable for commercial print.
Q2
What is the key advantage of SVG over PNG for logos?
ASVG scales to any size without quality loss
BSVG has a smaller file size
CSVG supports more colours
DSVG loads faster on all browsers
SVG is mathematically defined, not pixel-based — perfect at every size from favicon to billboard.
Q3
What does a TIFF file offer that JPEG does not?
ALossless quality — no degradation on save
BSmaller file sizes
CTransparency support
DAnimation capability
Every JPEG re-save compresses further. TIFF never loses quality — archive in TIFF, export JPEG only for delivery.
KPI · ROI · B2B · GDPR · Typography
ROI
Return on Investment
/ɑːr.əʊ.aɪ/

Net profit divided by total cost, expressed as a percentage. The broadest measure of whether any investment was worthwhile.

“A £10k campaign generating £40k revenue = 300% ROI.”

FinanceStrategy
B2B
Business to Business
/biː.tuː.biː/

Marketing and selling to other companies rather than consumers. Longer sales cycles, multiple decision-makers, higher transaction values.

“Our entire client roster is B2B — we understand complex buying committees and board-level sign-off.”

StrategySales
GDPR
General Data Protection Regulation
/dʒiː.diː.piː.ɑːr/

EU law governing how organisations collect, store and use personal data. Penalties reach €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover.

“All our client websites include a GDPR-compliant cookie consent framework as standard.”

LegalDataCompliance
Kerning
Typographic letter-pair spacing
/ˈkɜːnɪŋ/

The optical adjustment of space between individual letter pairs. Poor kerning is the mark of an amateur — AV, WA and TO all need specific attention.

“Our brand guidelines specify kerning values for the logo at every reproduction size.”

DesignTypography
Leading
Typographic line spacing
/ˈlɛdɪŋ/

The vertical space between lines of text. Named after the strips of lead used in old typesetting. Too tight suffocates copy; too loose loses cohesion.

“Body copy at 17px benefits from leading of 1.7–1.8 for comfortable screen reading.”

DesignTypography
SOV
Share of Voice
/ɛs.əʊ.viː/

Your brand’s proportion of total media mentions versus all competitors. A high SOV typically predicts future market share growth.

“After six months of our PR programme, client SOV grew from 8% to 22%.”

Q1
What is “kerning” in typography?
AThe adjustment of space between individual letters
BThe height of capital letters
CThe weight of a typeface
DThe space between lines of text
Poor kerning is the mark of an amateur. AV, WA, TO — all need optical adjustment that software alone won’t catch.
Q2
What does GDPR stand for?
AGeneral Data Protection Regulation
BGlobal Digital Privacy Rights
CGovernment Data Processing Rules
DGoverned Digital Platform Requirements
GDPR penalties reach €20M or 4% of global annual turnover — whichever is higher. Non-compliance is not a small risk.
Q3
What does “Share of Voice” (SOV) measure?
AYour brand’s proportion of media mentions versus competitors
BHow loud your ads are
CThe number of people who hear a radio ad
DYour percentage of social media followers
High SOV typically predicts future market share gains. It’s the share of the conversation, not just the spend.

How We Work

Independent. Collaborative.
Comfortable Either Way.

In AC Digital’s early years, we ghost-wrote, designed and developed for many of the agencies that are now our peers — building websites, running campaigns, producing print and managing digital strategy behind the scenes while other agencies took the credit. We designed award-winning brand identities that launched under other names. We wrote editorial content that appeared in national publications under other mastheads. We built and rebuilt digital platforms that others presented to their clients as their own work. It was, without question, the most valuable education we could have had — and we are not remotely embarrassed by it.

That experience gave us something genuinely rare in the agency world: a deep, unsentimental understanding of how agencies think, where they struggle, how they pitch and how they deliver. We learned to work invisibly when required, collaboratively when preferred, and independently when that is what the brief demands. We developed a discipline around deadlines, budgets and client communication that most agencies only acquire through painful experience.

Today, AC Digital works directly with clients across all six disciplines — and we are proud of every relationship in our portfolio. But we remain equally comfortable and equally capable as a white-label partner, a specialist sub-contractor, or a fully integrated creative collaborator for agencies that need depth, capacity or expertise they don’t have in-house. No ego. No territorial instinct. No desire for credit beyond doing the work brilliantly. Just results that make everyone look good.

It is a way of working that has earned us long-term relationships across the creative industries — with agencies, brands, publishers and institutions who know that when AC Digital is involved, the work will be delivered with precision, professionalism and genuine creative ambition, regardless of whose name appears on the final product.
